What's a cat café you ask? Well... cat cafés originated in Taiwan, with the first one opening in Taipei in 1998. The concept gained popularity in Japan, which as a whole has over 150 cat cafés. Because many dwellings in Japan do not allow pets, the popularity of the cafés has been attributed to a desire to interact with cats and relieve stress. Today, many cat cafés are sprouting up across the United States with cafés in New York City, Portland, Washington D.C., San Diego, and more.
